At a very young age I had a passion for child development. I have been on that path for more than 20 years. My passion for Mary’s House was nurtured in November and December of 2005 during an internship for my first Masters in Birth through Kindergarten Interdisciplinary Studies and Special Education. The internship was facilitating parenting sessions for Mary’s House. I was also teaching preschool during that time at the University of NC at Greensboro (UNCG). After finishing my masters I retired from UNCG in 2010/2011 and worked part-time as a case manager and was the parenting instructor for Mary’s House and Mary’s Homes.
I made a decision to return to school because I needed knowledge in substance use disorders. I had the family and human development side of Mary’s House and now needed to understand how substance use disorder played a part in how mothers parented their children and how or if this hindered child development. I went back to school, A&T State University where I received a Master in Science for Rehabilitation Counseling with a certification in Behavioral Addictions. I went on to become the Assistant Director for Mary’s House in January of 2014. And now, I am proud to be the Executive Director of an agency that has empowered mothers and their children for over 18 years.
We are more like those we serve than not.
All people have the capacity for change.
